After a hail storm blows through, you might suspect damage to your roof and home. Although we suggest you hire a professional to check for damage, you may want to check on your own. We completely understand but please take caution. We’ve gathered a few photos from our past jobs and tips that might help you determine hail damage on your roof.
Before jumping on your roof, you may be able to find some evidence on the ground. Take a walk around your home and look for dents, cracks or breaks on windows, screens, doors and even patio furniture. Take a good look at your outdoor appliances like air conditioning units, and look for dents or excessive water intake. If your trees and shrubs are stripped of foliage there is a possibility your roof may be damaged too.
There are a couple of things to look for when trying to identify hail damage on your shingles. There will usually be random damage with no discernable pattern. Many hail hits are black in color because of loss of granules which may expose the roof felt. Hail hits are soft to the touch, like the bruise on an apple.
While on your roof, also look at your roofing accessories for hail dents. Notice the large dent on the turbine below.
